Keeping Your Dog’s Eyes Healthy

Your heart melts every time you look into those soulful eyes. Filled with unwavering trust and boundless love, your buddy’s eyes help them view life with curiosity and excitement, ready for the next adventure with you. Those beautiful eyes are also a window to your dog’s health and well-being.

Dogs See the World Differently

Ever wondered how your dog sees the world? While their eyes are structurally similar to ours, there are some fascinating differences. If you could see through your dog’s eyes, colors would appear in a spectrum of reds and greens, and their night vision would put yours to shame. Plus, you may have noticed the extra protective layer in their eyes. Commonly known as “third eyelids,” these membranes slide up or down to protect their corneas from harm.

Get to Know Your Dog’s Eyes

Healthy eyes are bright and clear, with symmetrical pupils. There’s usually a small amount of eye discharge from your buddy’s tear ducts, especially after a nap! Watch how your dog’s eyes shine when they catch light in the darkness. This reflection of light, called “eye shine,” should appear clear and unclouded.

How to Spot a Problem

Unfortunately, our furry friends aren’t immune to eye problems. Signs of dullness, excessive watering, redness, or unusual discharge could signal trouble. Here’s what to look out for:

·  Is one eye held more closed than the other?

·  Do the eyes look dull or cloudy?

·  Are your dog’s eyes constantly weeping and staining their fur?

·  Are your dog’s inner eyelids red or inflamed?

·  Is there excessive or oddly colored discharge in the eye?

·  Is your dog’s third eyelid visible or impaired?

·  Does your dog appear to be squinting?

·  Is your dog rubbing their eyes with their paws or on a surface?

Common Eye Conditions

One of the most common issues is conjunctivitis, also known as ‘pink eye.’ It can be caused by debris in the eye, infections, allergies, or insufficient tear production, resulting in inflammation and discomfort. Conjunctivitis usually clears up on its own or with gentle eye washing, but if it doesn’t, or seems severe, your vet can provide further treatment.

Recurring conjunctivitis might mean your buddy has ‘dry eye’. This is a painful condition caused by inadequate tear production and can lead to permanent blindness. Early detection and treatment are essential here.

Cataracts are another common cause of worsening eyesight, particularly in older dogs. If you notice cloudiness in one or both of your dog’s eyes, it could be a sign of their development. While cataracts are usually painless, they can lead to blindness if left untreated.

Active dogs, especially those with protruding eyes, are prone to scratches or injuries to the cornea. Deep scratches can cause a corneal ulcer. These need to be treated quickly as they can spread and affect the rest of the eyeball.

Lastly, glaucoma. This painful and serious condition is caused by increased pressure within the eyeball. Symptoms include a hazy appearance in the eye, redness, and excessive tearing. You may notice your dog is squinting or is sleeping more. See your vet immediately.

Special Eye Conditions

Diabetic dogs are at higher risk of developing cataracts, which can lead to rapid vision loss, in some cases even overnight. If your furry friend is diabetic, it’s vital that you and your vet regularly monitor their pupils for cloudiness and test their vision.

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) is a genetic condition that gradually causes blindness. It’s not painful, but early stages are difficult to detect. Your vet can conduct a DNA test to see if your buddy might have PRA and suggest ways to proactively manage it.

Breeds like French Bulldogs and Shih Tzus are prone to eye injuries due to their prominent eyes and incomplete blinking. It’s important to seek immediate veterinary attention if they have an eye injury.

See Your Vet Regularly

Canine eye diseases can be challenging to detect early, and advanced stages often require urgent treatment. Partner with your vet to ensure regular veterinary check-ups for your furry friend and you’ll ensure your best friend enjoys a lifetime of clear vision and good eye health.
