Common Health Hazards Your Dog May Encounter this Summer

Your dog probably isn’t the only one ready to explore the great outdoors and enjoy the sunshine. Outdoor fun is good for everyone’s well-being.

No matter how you search out adventure this season, it’s important to keep an eye out for fleas and ticks. To keep your furry friend healthy and able to enjoy their favorite things all summer long, here’s what you need to know.

WHERE FLEAS & TICKS COME FROM

Fleas and ticks are parasite bugs your dog often picks up outside. Ticks are commonly found in heavy grass or wooded areas. Fleas can be found in these areas too, but are more likely to come from other animals your dog may socialize with outside.

These tiny bugs bite your dog and consume blood leaving your pet in an anemic state. Both fleas and ticks can cause long term health issues for your pet if left untreated.

TICKS

Ticks are visible. Sometimes your dog might respond to them, other times they may not even notice they are there. Check your dog regularly for ticks especially if you venture into thickly grassed areas. If found, remove them immediately. It is best to use tweezers to ensure the entire tick is removed. A tick can continue to live with just its head, we know, gross. Most veterinarians recommend removing the tick, putting it in a jar and bringing it into their office. That way the tick can be tested to begin treating potential health issues caused by the bite.

FLEAS

Fleas are commonly identified by excessive itching and scratching. Their bites cause an allergic reaction in the skin which will leave your dog feeling very uncomfortable. It’s like a ton of tiny mosquito bites all over.  In the case of fleas, you’ll want to bathe your dog with shampoo formulated to remove fleas. Be sure to also shampoo carpet and furniture to ensure the bugs will not return to your dog.

PROTECTING YOUR DOG

The threat of fleas and ticks can be neutralized with flea and tick preventative medicine. Talk to your veterinarian to find the right treatment for your dog.

The hazards caused by fleas and ticks are easily prevented and addressed. The key thing to remember is to pay attention to the cues your dog is giving. As you get ready to go on adventures, don’t forget the needs that your dog will have along the way. Treating them for fleas and ticks will help everyone enjoy summertime activities.
